Are you looking to get your windows tinted but keep them legal? The regulations for car window tint differ from SUV tint laws, and knowing what is allowed can be confusing.
Our guide covers everything you must know to stay compliant, avoid tickets, and avoid paying for the tinting to be redone.
WA state window tint law is based on the concept of Visible Light Transmission (VLT), the percentage of outside light that can penetrate the inside of your vehicle. The greater the percentage of light that can pass through the glass, the higher the VLT number.
Washington State Tint Laws 2024
The Washington laws are specific to the type of vehicle. Commercial vehicle tint laws, pickup truck window tint laws, and SUV tint laws are the same; car window tint laws are substantially different.

You are permitted a slightly reflective film on the front and back side windows that helps reduce heat and glare. However, these windows may be 35% reflective at most.
Other WA State Window Tint Laws
No mirror finish or spray-on tints are permitted, nor are the following colors: black, red, gold, or yellow.
A sticker verifying legal tinting must be displayed between the film and the glass in the driver’s side window.
Oregon Tinted Window Laws vs. Washington Laws
A significant difference is that while tints below 24% VLT are illegal in Washington, the bar is 35% VLT in Oregon.
Another difference is that the maximum reflectivity allowed is 13% rather than 35%. Furthermore, Oregon does not require any display of certification.

Washington Headlight and Tail Light Tint Laws
As defined in WAC 204–21–230, it is important to avoid adding aftermarket decorations or modifications that obstruct the headlamp lens or other lighting devices on motor vehicles. This includes features like tinted plastic glass covers, grilles, or slotted covers that can reduce the effectiveness of the lighting equipment.
Medical Exception
You do not need to fill out any forms or submit anything to get a window tint medical exemption. Instead, you must carry a written verification from a licensed physician explaining why you need the exemption in your vehicle. Always keep this verification in your car and show it to law enforcement if they ask for it.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Expect to pay around $124 for illegal window tinting every time you are cited.
