Michigan Tint Laws 2024
Michigan tint darkness laws are based on the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) percentage of the window, or how much light comes through. The higher the VLT%, the more light can pass through the film. The lower the VLT%, the darker the tint.
Legal Tint For Sedans, SUVs, and Vans:
- Windshield: Any darkness, non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
- Front Side windows: Any darkness can be applied but only on the top 4 inches (AS-1 line).
- Back Side windows: Any darkness can be used.
- Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.

Michigan Window Tint Reflection Law
While Michigan doesn’t have a limit for tint darkness, there is a limit for solar reflections. The front side windows and back side windows for sedans, SUVs, and vans must not be more than 35% reflective.

Section 257.225 of the Michigan Vehicle Code states that your plate information cannot be obstructed in any way.

Michigan tail light tint laws state that they cannot be darkened or obstructed. The same goes for your headlights. All lights must not be obstructed or altered.
Medical Exemptions For Window Tint
Michigan state law window tint exemption covers medical conditions that need window tinting for health concerns. A doctor’s note is required for this exemption to be considered. In the case of an exemption, the vehicle can have tinted windows for the safety of the individual per MCL 257.709(3)(e).
If you have one of these exemptions and cannot drive, you can have another driver operate the vehicle for you without penalty for the darkened windows.
